EDITOR'S NOTE: We have taken the decision to remove the forum message regarding the closure of East Devon toilets.
A spokesperson from East Devon District Council said today:
"East Devon District Council strongly and categorically refutes any suggestion that it is “has decided” to reduce funding on the district public toilets, as suggested by a web petition. The Council has refurbished toilets in Budleigh Salterton and refurbishment of blocks at Honiton and Seaton is in progress. Many of the District’s toilets are open year round and those that are closed for the winter are about to be reopened for the summer season – on 1 April to be precise. Indeed the toilets at Orcombe Point in Exmouth have been opened at weekends earlier than scheduled due to the fine weather. "
Didn't read the initial post (or the petition) but we visited the public toilets in Newton Poppleford recently and I am reliably informed that they were last refurbished in the 1980's! The tiles in the ladies WC were missing in lots of places; one WC wouldn't flush at all but had been used so was in a disgusting state and the other cubicle, where the WC did actually flush, had what appeared to be faeces on the floor! Yuk, yuk, yuk. Better to close them than allow such 'facilities' to be used in my personal opinion.
Perhaps the "spokesperson" might want to try and use the toilets at Otterton, which seem definitely "closed" to me! Or was it my imagination? It is criminal to steal a purse, daring to steal a fortune, a mark of greatness to steal a crown. The blame diminishes as the guilt increases
It seems that the web petition was ahead of its time! It is now (Jan 2010) a matter of public record (via Journal reports) that EDDC are indeed seeking to close a number of public conveniences in the district. You don't have to have been a long term resident to recognise the EDDC MO in this. (Deny. allow passage of time/go ahead) One hopes that they may be persuaded from carrying out the threat but, if they do, then there is the matter of what to do with the closed facilities. Selling the land off has already been discussed- and has happened with some closed facilities in the past. However, it must not be allowed to happen again for, when [another] administration does finally come along, they should have the facilities available to reinstate. In some areas, after sell-off, no such provision is available, nor any suitable land to purchase for much needed facilities.
Ditto your comments "Sweeney", as you stated the "standard EDDC MO"! in operation as usual.Plausable deniability. Is it not a shame that those members of EDDC who make statements which "categorically deny" an accusation, cannot be prosecuted/fired or punished for their lies. Then again I suppose with the example set by MP's and government in general that's not liable to happen under any party. It is criminal to steal a purse, daring to steal a fortune, a mark of greatness to steal a crown. The blame diminishes as the guilt increases
