Indifferent [:|] Amusement Arcade for Sidmouth
Reply Quote

Well - history could be in the making. It appears that EDDC has approved plans, on 1st July,  for the use of the ground floor of the old Dove Pub to be used as an Amusements and Gaming Machines Arcade.

I expect this will make the town council stand up and squawk - they opposed the plans at a previous meeting. In order to keep out the 'riff-raff' no doubt.

Wink [;)] Surprise [:O] Party!!! [<:o)]

Front page news in the Sidmouth Herald then - although the paper appears to quote the owner as having plans to convert the old pub to a gaming centre for 'middle-aged women'!! Wink [;)] Huh? [:^)] Stick out tongue [:P]

Might be worth a sniff round when it's up and running - more for the 'middle aged women' than the slot machines!! Wink [;)]

Too late in-cars, the application was passed by EDDC on 1st July.

I'd be interested to know though - why do you think EDDC should have refused the application?

Seadog,

I would have thought that would be quite plain and clear cut! Sidmouth is a very special place and has been for many years without the need for Blackpool type amusement arcades.

Have noticed, on a recent border crossing to Exmouth, that the Amusement Arcade in Imperial Road (opposite bus station) has a large banner in the window stating it is an Adult Gaming Centre!!

Ah  - thats what we're getting is it?

Hmm [^o)]

in-cars,

Well not really plain and clear cut to many who view Sidmouth without 'rose tinted spectacles'. Perhaps there are those that see Sidmouth as a typical south coast seaside town - and most seaside towns have an amusement arcade. After all it has got a colourfully signed up shop near the esplanade selling beach-wear, postcards (no kiss-me-quick hats in stock yet) - a fish and chip shop and ice-cream shop near the beach - why not an amusement arcade? They had video game machines in what was 'The Mermaid' on the seafront and also the 'Anchor Inn' several years ago and I believe that a couple of the pubs have gaming machines now.

I've noticed over recent years that Sidmouth is becoming an attraction for coach borne day-trippers - all piling off their coaches opposite the Belmont and flooding into town in their droves looking for places to spend their money. Some make a bee-line for the tea-rooms, some wander around the town and esplanade stuffing themselves with pasties and pies out of a bag - I wonder if some of them yearn for a flutter on the 'slotties'?

It will certainly be interesting to see how this pans out.

Hmm [^o)]

Yes, it is certainly not clear cut. There are other views than that of Sidmouth being 'the jewel in the crown' and a 'select Regency town'. There is a very large silent majority of those of us born and bred here that see the town as a home and place to work and then go out for a little drink, entertainment and meal in the evening. Albeit we cannot afford to buy our own homes here because of the inflated prices caused by incoming 'retirees' who have probably visited us years ago - then came down later in life to buy their house and then try their hardest to stop ventures like this amusement arcade just because they don't like it and it doesn't fit in with their little retirement town.

If they'd have had their own way 30 years ago we wouldn't have had a chinese takeaway at the top of the town.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with an amusement arcade - it will give the visitors something to keep their children occupied with when it rains.

Its the seaside after all!

Seadog,

I do see your point! I have no problem with public houses that have gaming machines inside, in fact I can be seen quite often putting an odd coin in while enjoying a pint or 3. What I really don't want to see is as I described in a recent note. You must agree that Sidmouth is a special place with much to offer. Yes Sidmouth is a typical south coast seaside town with many problems akin to other areas. However, EDDC have so far steered clear of spoiling the image of Sidmouth.

Please tell me you don't want to see the bright flashing lights and noisy echos of these outlets?

I don't think bright lights and noise is even being thought of by the person seeking to open the Amusement Arcade.

People always look at the worst case scenario to try and get their way !!

Well said, I too have a problem with outsiders buying houses thus inflating the price. perhaps the goverment should inflate the council taxes making the second home market less attractive and less affordable.

The jewel that is Sidmouth must be, firstly, affordable for the local and secondly preserved in a sustainable state for the locals and visitors alike

Hi 'in-cars'

Sidmouth is special because I live here - (and you probably) but thats about it. What exactly has it got to offer that you cannot get anywhere else? Local shops - you can get those in any nearby village or town. But, after about 10am its horrendous to make your way around the town - the pavements are too narrow and can hardly support walking two abreast let alone when a mobility scooter comes chuntering at you - one must often step out into the road to make way for elderly pedestrians where you then risk being clipped by vehicles (and more mobility scooters) that are squeezing past illegally parked cars in Loading Bays - paving slabs are 'popping' due to heavy lorries driving up on them in Fore Street. You run the risk of injury when walking around Market Place, Old Fore Street or Church Street - visitors do not know whether those areas are fully pedestrianised or not - neither do some drivers!

A shopping experience in town is enough to put you off the place for good.

I don't think the application for the amusement arcade is going to include flashing lights or noise - I think it will do no harm at all to what is already in the area.

Maybe you are right - 'Local' - the town is not what it used to be. It is definitely attracting more 'day trippers' - encouraged by the local trades people filling their coffers.

Perhaps an amusement arcade will not be so horrendous after all.

Hmm [^o)]

I have lived and worked in many places, but Sidmouth, for me, is somewhere that i can rest and recover. Yes it busy and the pavements are narrow, the streets are full of parked/abandoned cars.

Sorry i just see with my heart not my eyes
